Send It Forward
Thursday, May 27, 2010

Dear Friends and Readers,

Please excuse my absence of late.  The trip to Africa was grueling and the return was somewhat testy on my old body.  Combine that with having to rush to Colorado Springs immediately for my grandson's graduation and 3 weeks of work piled up, I simply ran out of gas.  But the Lord has been good to me this week, digging deep into my soul and teaching me many new things -- and as so often the case, most of what He teaches me is about the Kingdom of God.  In that regard let me celebrate my return to writing with this message about sending it forward.

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.   But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matt. 6:19-21)

John D. Rockefeller amassed a tremendous fortune. Millions upon millions in days when wealth was unheard of, flowed into his coffers.  When he died, in this fledgling nation, someone asked his pastor, how much did Rockefeller leave?  And the pastor answered, All of it.  The old saying, “you can’t take it with you,” is true.  No one has ever taken their wealth with them.

But guess what, Jesus said, "you can send it ahead."  In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus clearly articulates one of the great Kingdom Principles.  We cannot amass wealth permanently here on earth, but we can amass wealth in our eternal home.  There our treasures cannot be lost, stolen, or eroded by time or critters.  Everything we do for the Kingdom on earth is stored up for us in our eternal home.  So how do we store up our treasures in heaven?

First of all we must realize that everything we have belongs to God.  There is not a penny in our pockets that was not given by Him.  We do not have a single blessing of family, friends, property, home, business, or health that is not a gift from Him.  We are stewards on earth of the Father’s gifts and blessings.  Once we understand that we are managers of God’s resources, that casts a whole new light on our use of money, relationships, and gifts of God.  Jesus tells many parables about this.  We are to take what God has given and manage it for His glory and increase.

So in order to send it forward, we must manage it well on earth.  Here is God’s management plan.  For money, He wants the first 10 percent to come back to Him as a tithe.  Basically what God is saying is, “I have given you everything, and I want 10 percent back as a demonstration of your faith in Me.” This is the money that God uses to advance His Kingdom on earth, but it is stored up for us in heaven as well (Matt. 6:20).  For relationships, God wants all people He has entrusted to us to be returned to Him.  He has given us family and friends and associates, and He wants our lives to be a witness for Him.  And for those we send forward to Him, our eternal wealth increases.  Daniel says, “those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.(Dan. 12:3).  For gifts and businesses God wants them managed for His glory.  He expects us to make wise decisions, godly decisions, and knowledgeable decisions.  He wants our businesses to flourish because as the businesses of godly people increase so too does the money available for Kingdom work.  And all of that is sent ahead, Jesus told the wise servants who invested His money wisely, “You will be in charge of much in the Kingdom of God.”

Everything we do on earth has Kingdom consequences.  And God gives us a choice.  We can accept our rewards on earth where all things will rot and decay, or we can send our blessings forward to heaven.  Paul said, “Set your hearts on things above . . . set your minds on things above.” Kingdom people live this life for eternity.  And God said, “Test me in this and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.(Mal. 3:10)
