An Appointment with the King
Sunday, May 1, 2011

“Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by My Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.’” (Mt. 25:34)

Let’s just suppose for a moment that you adore the President of the U. S.  He is a person you admire and would love to meet.  And because you believe him to be good for the country, you serve him.  You defend him among his critics, you work locally to gain support for his agenda, and you volunteer to be a central part of his re-election.  He is your guy.  Then one morning, you walk to the mailbox (those are the antiques which still grace some rural front drives) and there among the full color flyers, occupant post cards, and picture window missiles of bad news, you see a letter with a golden seal on it.  Closer examination reveals it is the seal of the President of the United States.  Even though your first thought is that it is a fund raising letter, you cannot wait to open it.  There you have it, a letter beyond your wildest dreams – an invitation to have an audience with the President.  It is a short letter, but it has a smudgeable (my dictionary says that is not a word, but you know what I mean) signature from the man himself.  It says, “I desire to meet with you on (such and such date) from 10:45 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.  A member of my staff will be in contact with you concerning the meeting.  Thanks for all your hard work; I look forward to meeting you personally.

After the euphoria of the letter wears off the reality of meeting the President begins to sink in.  What are you going to wear?  How do you address him?  What should I prepare for?  Does he have a role for me to play in his administration?  How can I best leave a favorable impression?  All these questions begin to ransack your peace of mind.  Before long, your worry level exceeds your excitement.  And then some very nice person from the President’s protocol office calls you.  Their job is not only to put you at ease, but to help you prepare for this historic event of your life.  The meeting is a month out and there is much to do to be ready.  So you begin your journey of preparation for this flashbulb moment in time.  And while the meeting is only 15 minutes, it captures every thought leading up to it.

All that is to say, that life on this earth is to prepare us for a meeting with the King – Jesus Christ, the Lord God Almighty.  The things we do, the preparations we make, the thoughts of our mind, are really all part of this journey to the Throne Room.  That is what transformation is all about.  Studying God’s Word, worshiping, praising, praying, discipline, study, all lead to that glorious day in which we will meet the King – but not for 15 minutes, for eternity.

If we really believe in Christ, our lives are a journey on earth to meet with Him in the heavenly realms.  All earthly glory, wealth, and relationships are merely part of the process of reaching the divine hour.  As my life begins to wane, as friends begin to age and die, as my loved ones go to meet with the King, the reality becomes all the more tangible.  What will I wear, what do I need to do to get ready, how will I behave, what is the protocol?

All of these answers are given to us in the Scriptures.  And our life on this earth will either classify us as a sheep or a goat in the King’s eyes.  The sheep will be serving, worshiping, praying, and learning more and more about Him.  The goats will live as if He doesn’t even really exist.  But no matter how you live your life, the appointment is near.  Your inheritance is being made ready.  I have a dear friend who has a great philosophy of management and of life.  He says, “You write your resume every day.”  If that is true on earth, how much more true in the heavenly realms.  We get up every day to write another page in our eternal resume, as we prepare for the jobs of our lives – ruling with the King.

Today is the Lord’s Day.  Begin preparing today for the meeting with the King.  It is coming.  It will not be a flashbulb moment, but an eternal destination.  And you will appear as a very prepared sheep, or an ill-advised goat.  The choice is yours.  But the letter is in your box.
